How Collaborating with Dr. Vijay Improved the User Experience of his Lab Website

Improving a website’s user experience can transform how visitors interact with content and find information. When I worked with Dr. Vijay on his lab website, https://www.vijaylab.org/, the goal was clear: make the site more accessible, engaging, and easy to navigate for researchers, students, and collaborators. This post shares how our collaboration enhanced the site’s usability and overall experience.

Understanding the Challenges of the Original Website

Dr. Vijay’s lab website contained valuable research information, publications, and team details, but visitors often struggled to find what they needed quickly. The original design had:

Designing a Clear and Intuitive Navigation Structure

One of the biggest improvements came from reorganizing the navigation menu. We grouped related content into clear categories such as:

  • Research Areas

  • Publications

  • Team Members

  • News and Events

  • Contact Information

This structure helped visitors find relevant sections without guessing. We also introduced a sticky menu that stays visible as users scroll, so they can switch pages easily at any point.

To support this, we added a search bar prominently at the top, allowing users to type keywords and jump directly to specific papers or topics.

Enhancing Content Presentation for Better Readability

Long paragraphs and technical jargon can overwhelm visitors. We worked with Dr. Vijay to rewrite some content in simpler language and break it into smaller sections with descriptive headings. This made scanning the page faster and more pleasant.

We used bullet points and numbered lists to highlight key findings and lab achievements. For example, the publications page now features:

  • Clear titles with clickable links to full papers

  • Brief summaries explaining the significance of each study

  • Filters to sort papers by year or topic

These changes helped users quickly assess the lab’s work and find relevant research.

Making the Website Mobile-Friendly and Accessible

With many users accessing websites on mobile devices, responsiveness was crucial. We implemented a responsive design that adapts layout and font sizes based on screen size. This ensures the site looks good and functions well on smartphones and tablets.

Accessibility improvements included:

  • Adding alt text to images for screen readers

  • Ensuring sufficient color contrast for readability

  • Using larger clickable areas for links and buttons

These changes made the site usable for a wider audience, including those with disabilities.

Adding Visual Elements to Engage Visitors

To make the site more inviting, we incorporated relevant images and graphics. Photos of the lab space, equipment, and team members provide a personal touch. We also included diagrams and charts summarizing research findings, helping visitors understand complex data visually.

Visual cues like icons next to menu items and buttons guide users intuitively through the site.

Results and Feedback from the Collaboration

After launching the updated website, Dr. Vijay’s lab saw several positive outcomes:

  • Increased time spent on the site by visitors

  • Higher engagement with publications and news updates

  • More inquiries from prospective students and collaborators

Feedback from users highlighted the ease of navigation and clearer presentation of information as major improvements.

Final Thoughts on Improving Lab Websites

Working with Dr. Vijay demonstrated how thoughtful design and user-focused changes can make a scientific lab website more effective. Key takeaways include:

  • Organize content logically with clear navigation

  • Use simple language and break up text for readability

  • Ensure mobile compatibility and accessibility

  • Add visuals that support and enhance the content
